    Answer: It's possible depending on the ice thickness. You would need to have a little water with you, pour it on the ice, and set the transducer in it. A few manufacturers make a shoot through depth only unit. I do not own one because they are not reliable (according to the reviews). The best way to know where you are at on your given lake with regard to depth before you punch a hole is to download and use Navionics on your smart phone. It isn't 100% accurate on all lakes but it will get you very reasonably close.     Answer: You will get some interference if you are real close. I'm talking a couple of feet. Otherwise my friend and I fish together all the time and don't have trouble.
