The L'Orient is a formidable ship from the Ocean-class of ships, designed by engineer Jacques-Noel Sane. Originally named the Dauphin Royal, this three-decker ship of the line served during a time of great political upheaval and was promptly renamed the Sans-Culotte. After three years, she was again renamed as the Orient, a tribute to a political movement. One of her notable engagements was the Battle of Genoa, where she served as the flagship of Rear Admiral Martin.
Though she lost contact with the fleet at nightfall, the French fleet managed to break from their pursuers and the Sans-Culotte rejoined them. The Battle of Genoa ended in a minor British victory, but it showcased the power and resilience of the Orient. The Orient also played a crucial role in the Invasion of Egypt as the flagship under Admiral Brueys. She ferried the chiefs of the Armee d'Egypte, including General Bonaparte, successfully circumventing the British blockade and capturing Malta before landing troops in Egypt.
The fleet anchored in Aboukir Bay, east of Alexandria. However, the Battle of the Nile proved to be a turning point for the Orient. The British fleet, led by Rear-Admiral Horatio Nelson, discovered the French fleet after months of searching. In a daring attack, the British split their fleet into two divisions, trapping the French ships in a devastating crossfire.
The Orient traded heavy fire with HMS Bellerophon, inflicting significant damage but also suffering heavy damage in return. The French Admiral Brueys was killed, almost severed in two by a cannonball. As the battle raged on, a fire broke out on board the Orient, which the British capitalized on by pouring firepower into the stricken vessel. Approximately an hour later, the fire reached the on-board magazines, resulting in a massive explosion that turned night into day.
