Introducing our 1 Quart - 18" Horticultural Black Lava for Succulent and Bonsai Tree Soil Mix, the perfect addition to your gardening collection. This black lava cinder is an ideal component for bonsai soil, providing a neutral pH level and improving soil drainage. With a particle size ranging from 1/16 to 3/16 inches, it is heavier than pumice and perlite, ensuring that it won't float to the top when watering.
Our black lava is made from 100% natural volcanic scoria, which does not break down easily or decolorize easily. This makes it the best additive for older potted specimens that do not require frequent repotting. Each quart contains approximately 4 cups or 0.25 gallons of black lava, all carefully sieved to discard dust and coarse particles.
Not only is our black lava perfect for bonsai soil mix, but it can also be used for top dressing, thanks to its wet-dry color that helps set water schedules. When making your own bonsai soil mix, remember that deciduous trees and broad-leaf evergreens require more soil and mulch, while conifers require more sand and less soil and mulch. For younger bonsai or unhealthy trees, a coarse mix is recommended.
When growth is not required, use smaller size sand and less mulch in the mix. To pot your bonsai, use chopsticks to tease apart roots and drive fresh soil around newly pruned roots. This step also helps eliminate air pockets in the medium, ensuring optimum growth.
