About This Item
Introducing the Tamiya America, Inc 1/72 Douglas F4D1 Skyray Model Kit! Step back in time to the era of advanced aeronautical technology with this incredible replica of the F4D Skyray - the only operational interceptor with delta wings in the U.S. Navy. Based on the studies of Dr. Alexander Lippisch, the F4D Skyray was developed by the Douglas firm using captured information from Germany at the end of World War II.
In December 1948, Douglas was awarded a contract to construct and test two prototypes. The first prototype took flight in January 1951, followed by the second prototype shortly thereafter. The airframe of the second prototype even set two new world records for absolute speed and a closed course record in October 1953. The production version, known as the F4D-1, made its maiden flight in June 1954 and entered squadron service in April 1956.
The F4D-1 featured distinctive 50-degree sweptback wings with round tips, equipped with leading edge slats and trailing edge elevons. The inboard trailing edges of the wings were fitted with trimmers, and the outer portions of the wings could be folded upwards for carrier stowage. While it never saw combat, the Skyray proved its high capability as an interceptor with numerous world records and scramble actions in Taiwan during the late 1950s. This model kit allows you to recreate this iconic aircraft with all its improvements and refinements.
