STANLEY Block Planes 1-12-220 Editorial Review
This Stanley block plane is a decent choice for quick or small jobs, but it requires some investment before it can be used. The blade holds an edge, and it has a simple design that is effective in smoothing out rough surfaces. However, the lever-cap chip-breaker combo is not well-built, and the lateral adjustment is out of whack when the iron is square in the throat. Adjusting the iron can also prove to be difficult because of the backlash in the iron depth adjustment screw. The base of the plane is made of cast iron, but the machining is terrible, requiring a long time to sand it down to flatness. While it is not a small or lightweight plane, it is good for pushing through tough surfaces. In conclusion, getting a used block plane or one from a reputable source is a better option, as there are better and cheaper options at this price point.
