- The story of Tituba, the iconic name of women accused of witchcraft.Born on the island of Barbados, Tituba was raised in healing and witchcraft by Man Yaya, who had supernatural powers. She is sold as a slave to a clergyman along with the Native American John she married, and her struggle for life begins, in which she is dragged to Boston and then to the town of Salem. In the hysterical environment of the puritan community living in this town, she became the first woman accused of witchcraft in the famous Salem Witches case in 1692, and fought hard to achieve freedom.Tituba's stunning life story is revived by Maryse Conde's extraordinarily moving narrative. The novel, which makes Conde the winner of the Grand Prix Litteraire de la Femme (Grand Prize of Women's Literature), returns Tituba to her hometown, Barbados, to the period when the first black slave rebellions took place on the island. The suffering of slaves, racism, accusations of witchcraft against women, the first movements of women's solidarity and feminism, and the view of life after death directly affect the reader's heart with Conde's impressive pen.
