İkinci baskıdaysa ne çevirmen adı vardı, ne de yazar. Şöyle der Walpole bir mektubunda: Uyandığımda o düşten anımsadığım tek şey, kendimi bir Ortaçağ şatosunda görmemdi (benim gibi kafası Gotik hikâyelerle dolu biri için bu mekân çok doğal sayılır); hayli yüksek bir merdivenin en tepesinde, tırabzanın üzerinde son derece büyük bir zırhlı el gördüm. O akşam oturdum ve ne söyleyeceğimi, ne anlatacağımı bilmeden yazmaya koyuldum.
